Gunpla gets most of the attention when people think "Bandai model kit," but the same engineering that makes a Gundam snap together beautifully also goes into Bandai's other mecha and sci-fi lines. One of the standouts currently on our shelves is the 1/1000 BBY-03 Ginga, the experimental sister ship to the legendary Space Battleship Yamato, straight out of Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199.

If you grew up on Star Blazers, or you're just after a genuinely impressive sci-fi warship build, this is one of the more ambitious non-Gundam kits we carry.

What you're building

The kit reproduces the Ginga's sleek, futuristic hull with fine panel lining and mechanical detail straight out of the box — no extra detailing required to get a display-ready result, though there's plenty of room for hobbyists who want to push it further with paint and weathering.

What sets this kit apart from a standard single-ship build is the sheer amount of accessory hardware included:

  • Bridge dome parts in both colour and clear versions, so you can install an optional LED unit (sold separately) for an illuminated bridge on display
  • Main gun firing effect parts in three sizes, letting you pose the Ginga mid-broadside with its wave motion weaponry in action
  • A full support fleet: one Cosmo Zero, one missile-equipped Cosmo Zero variant, and two Cosmo Tiger II fighters with their own display tripods
  • A display stand built to hold the Ginga and its escort craft together, so you can build out a proper fleet diorama rather than a single static ship
  • Sticker sheet and water transfer decals for markings, plus the full instruction manual

It's effectively a small diorama in a box — the Ginga as the centrepiece, with fighters escorting it, guns blazing, on a single connected display base.

Finished build

Once assembled, the Ginga's silhouette is unmistakably part of the Yamato family — that same long, low hull line — but with its own distinct bridge design and detailing that marks it out as an experimental vessel rather than a straight Yamato reskin. On the stand with its escort fighters mounted, it reads as a genuine fleet scene rather than a single kit sitting alone on a shelf.

Who this kit is for

This isn't a beginner snap-together kit in the way our Pokémon QUICK!! line is — it's a proper display-scale build with a real part count, aimed at builders who already have a kit or two under their belt and want something with more presence on the shelf. If you've built a Gunpla High Grade or Real Grade kit before, you've got the skills for this one; the main difference is scale and subject matter rather than technique.

It's also a great option if you're after something different to bring along to one of our in-store build nights — most of the room will be working on Gundam or Pokémon kits, so a Yamato-verse warship tends to draw a crowd of its own.
