Bandai Pokémon Model Kits: A Beginner's Guide to Snap-Fit PokéPla

If you've ever wanted a Pikachu, a Charizard or a full-size Mega Rayquaza sitting on your shelf that you built yourself, Bandai's Pokémon Model Kit range (often called "PokéPla" by collectors) is the easiest entry point into model building there is. No cutting tools, no paint, no glue for most kits — just snap the pieces together and you've got a display-ready Pokémon in under an hour.

What is a Bandai Pokémon Model Kit?

These are official Bandai Spirits plastic model kits, built the same way as their Gunpla line — pre-coloured plastic runners (sprues) that snap together without glue. You don't need to paint them to get a great-looking result straight out of the box, though plenty of hobbyists do add extra detailing once they're comfortable with the basics. If you've built a Gunpla kit before, the skills carry straight across; if you haven't, Pokémon kits are actually one of the gentlest ways to learn.

The four main kit types

QUICK!! line — The entry point of the range and the biggest chunk of what we stock. These are small, simple kits (most finished figures sit in the 78–90mm range) built from a handful of parts with no tools required at all — everything separates cleanly from the runner by hand. Regularly $14.95 AUD, and it's where most of the numbered Pokémon in the range live: starters like Charmander, Squirtle, Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly, plus fan favourites like Pikachu, Mimikyu, Jigglypuff and the Eeveelutions.

Standard kits — A step up in detail and part count, still snap-fit and glue-free, covering fan-favourite Pokémon like Mewtwo, Eevee, Lugia and Gyarados. These typically include posing options or display stands, and sit in a similar $14.95–$25 price bracket depending on complexity.

Select Series — Bandai's more premium, poseable line, aimed at Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. Kits like Suicune and Xerneas fall into this range, often including proper display stands and more articulation than the QUICK!! line.

Evolution Sets — Four kits in one box, covering a full evolutionary line plus a bundled Pikachu. We carry sets for Torterra, Infernape, Empoleon and Hydreigon, each around $17.95 AUD — genuinely good value if you want to build a whole Sinnoh (or Unova) team in one sitting.

Above all of these sit the flagship kits — Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Lucario, Mega Rayquaza, Kyogre and the larger Select Series Legendaries like Miraidon. These are the showpiece builds of the range: bigger part counts, more detail, and priced accordingly from around $18 up to $46.99 for Mega Rayquaza.

Compared to Gunpla, most Pokémon kits are built for speed and simplicity — smaller part counts, chunkier pieces, and colour-accurate plastic that means you get a finished, screen-accurate Pokémon with zero painting required. That makes the QUICK!! line genuinely one of the best starting points we sell for kids, first-time builders, or anyone who wants a relaxed hour of building rather than a weekend project. And because there's no glue involved, there's no drying time and no mess to manage — open the box, snap the pieces, done.
