An Unexpected Prerelease: Magic: The Gathering — The Hobbit Arrives This Weekend
Pack your pipe and your pocket handkerchief — Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is almost here, and Hobby Collectors Australia is throwing open our doors as an official Wizards Play Network store for one of the biggest Prerelease weekends of the year. This Universes Beyond set brings J.R.R. Tolkien's classic tale of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and the Company of Dwarves to a fully Standard-legal Magic set — and you can be one of the very first players in the world to crack it open, right here in Fairfield.
If you've never been to a Prerelease before, here's the short version: it's a party. You get a sealed pool of brand-new cards nobody outside Wizards of the Coast has played with yet, you build a deck on the spot, and you battle it out with other local players in a relaxed, casual environment days before the set is available anywhere else.
🧙 What's Actually in The Hobbit?
This set is a genuine love letter to the source material. The Adventure mechanic makes its return, letting individual cards tell multi-part story beats straight out of the novel — think Bilbo's riddle game with Gollum, or the Company's escape from the Elvenking's halls, playing out across a single card. Expect plenty of Treasure tokens (very on-theme for a set about a dragon's hoard) and strong Dwarf tribal synergies for anyone wanting to build around Thorin's Company.
And then there's the headliner: Smaug, the Magnificent. The Lonely Mountain's most infamous resident lands as the set's mythic showpiece, available in three separate printings — including a jaw-dropping Gleaming Gold treatment that's already generating serious buzz in the collector community.
📅 Prerelease Event Details — This Weekend at HCA
We're running two Prerelease sessions to make sure everyone gets a shot at Middle-earth before the rest of the world:
- Friday 7 August 2026 — 6:30 PM
- Saturday 8 August 2026 — 1:30 PM
Where: Hobby Collectors Australia, 30 Ware St, Fairfield NSW 2165
Entry: $60.00 per player
Every player receives a Prerelease Pack containing 6 The Hobbit Play Boosters to build a 40-card Sealed deck on the spot (basic lands provided), then battles through Swiss-paired rounds against the rest of the pod. Complete two rounds and you'll walk away with two additional Play Booster packs as a participation prize on top of everything you opened. Registration with the Magic Companion App is required to play and to receive prizes and promos, so make sure that's set up before you arrive.
Spots are genuinely limited for both sessions, so if you want in on the first crack at The Hobbit, don't sit on this one.
