One Piece Card Game: The Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

One Piece Card Game: The Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

If you've noticed a wall of pirates, marines and DON!! cards taking over your local game store lately, you're not imagining things. The One Piece Card Game has become one of the fastest-growing trading card games in Australia, and with the 4th Anniversary set OP-17: The World's Strongest Warriors now in stock, there has never been a better time to jump in.

This guide covers where the game comes from, how it's actually played, and exactly what to buy first — with everything linked straight to what we've got in stock at Hobby Collectors Australia.

What Is One Piece?

Before it was a card game, One Piece was already one of the best-selling manga series of all time, created by Eiichiro Oda and serialised since 1997. The story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with the power to stretch like rubber, as he sails the Grand Line with his crew — the Straw Hat Pirates — chasing the ultimate treasure: the "One Piece" left behind by the legendary Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.

Along the way, Luffy and his crew run into towering villains, rival pirate crews, the World Government's Marines, and a cast of characters deep enough to fuel a card game with well over a dozen main sets. That's exactly what Bandai built with the One Piece Card Game, launched in 2022 and now heading into its fourth anniversary with OP-17.

How the One Piece Card Game Works

The One Piece Card Game is a two-player battle game, and if you've played a trading card game before, the core loop will feel familiar — but it has a few mechanics that are all its own.

  • Leader: Every deck is built around a single Leader card — usually a fan-favourite character — that sets your deck's colour(s) and grants an ongoing ability for the whole game.
  • Main Deck: A 50-card deck of Character, Event and Stage cards that support your Leader's strategy.
  • DON!! Deck: A separate 10-card deck of DON!! cards, which act as your resource for playing cards and powering up your characters' attacks.
  • Life: Instead of a shared life total, your Leader's printed Life value determines how many cards sit in your Life area — when your opponent's attacks strip that away, the game is on the line.
  • Colours: Cards come in six colours (Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Black, Yellow), and most Leaders use one or two, shaping very different playstyles from aggressive rushdown to grindy control.

A full game usually runs 20–40 minutes once you know the flow, making it a great fit for both quick games after school or work and longer tournament sessions.

How to Start Playing

The good news: you don't need to build a deck from scratch to get going. Bandai designs several entry points specifically for new players, and we keep them in stock for exactly that reason.

Fastest way to your first game: Set Sail Deck Set [SD-01]

The Set Sail Deck Set (SD-01) is the easiest way for two people to sit down and play together, straight out of the box. It includes two full 51-card decks (Luffy and Ace), 10 DON!! cards per deck, a Guide Book for each player, a 2-player playsheet and two deck cases — plus a bonus booster pack from the brand-new OP-17 set. At $49.95, it's the single best-value way to learn the game with a friend.

Prefer to build your own strategy? Try a Starter Deck

Each Starter Deck [ST-31 to ST-36] ($34.95) is built around a different Leader and colour combination, so you can pick the character or playstyle that appeals to you most and go from there. Buy two different colours with a friend and you're ready to play — or add booster packs later to start customising.

Want a guided lesson built in? Learn Together Deck Set [LD-01]
